One of the best driving roads in NorCal. A good mix of straights, long sweeping bends, tight S bends, and fantastic scenic views. |
|
Ridiculously road full of winding bends overlooking beautiful water reservoir. So many bends and steep that few cyclists attack it.... at least the few times I've been there. |
|
Drove this at night in the dark and was fantastic!!! Couldn't imagine what it would be like in the day. Cutting through canyons in the woods. Many elevation changes. |

Col De Turini is a famous mountain top in the south of France and is part of a 32 km rally stage starting from Sospel to La Bollène. It is the highest point in the stage standing at 1607 metres. This stretch of road is one of the most difficult and dangerous but also exciting stages in the WRC. It has the long straights where cars reach upto 180 km/h, 34 challenging hairpins and awesome views - all the things that make for one of the best driving roads in the world. Distance: 5.0 miles

San Bernardino Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2065 meters in the Swiss Alps connecting the towns of Hinterrhein and Misox. This road has its share of bends and hairpins but is more known for its scenic views and smooth roads. It also has a 6.6 km long tunnel but with a speed limit of 80km/h (50mph). |
|
Heading south from Davos, Switzerland to Stelvio, Italy they found everything they were looking for, what appears to be a driving enthusiasts heaven, the kind of road that brings everything about a car alive - miles of deserted road with breathtaking views, unending number of curves that would test every aspect of the car - steering, power, grip, brakes & handling. Not to forget a few tunnels for those in the mood for some tunnel blasting. Distance: 115.0 miles

En route to stelvio via Bormio, we cross the Stelvio pass (Passo dello Stelvio), at 2757 meters it is the second highest paved mountain road in the alps. Regarded by the motorists as one of the most challenging roads in the world, it has 60 hairpins with 48 of them on the northern / eastern ramp. With the roads narrower on the northern side and the hairpins ridiculously tight, this is the toughest part. Roads are very steep on this side of the pass and the ascent is even more tougher with almost zero visibility to oncoming vehicles. In contrast the southern / eartern ramp has a bit wider and faster hairpins and better road surface which will be more satisfying for those inclined towards less extreme driving. Distance: 11.0 miles

Route 112, or as its better known the Kancamagus Highway, is the only road that runs directly east and west through the heart of the White Mountain National Forest. This is a dramatic road that shows off the magnificence of one of New Hampshire’s best-loved scenic spots. From this road your vistas include wilderness and the highest peaks in the presidential range. During the summer and fall foliage months you’re likely to have plenty of company on your drive. But if the weather is clear who cares if the going is a little slow - this isn’t a drive to rush anyway. You’ll find plenty of pull-offs to admire the views and take a bunch of photos if the weather cooperates. Be warned though... the White Mountains are notorious for generating their own weather, especially in the Presidential Range, where many of the peaks are above timberline. Mount Washington is cloaked with cloud cover 53% of its days. Distance: 33.9 miles

Winding between granite rock, thundering waterfalls and shimmering ocean, this 135 kilometre thoroughfare, also known as Highway 99, takes you from Horseshoe Bay to Pemberton with stops at Squamish and Whistler in between. As the main artery from Vancouver to Whistler, the Sea to Sky sees plenty of action, especially with the 2010 Winter Olympics slated to be held in both venues. The highway offers spectacular views of both Howe Sound and the surrounding snow-peaked mountains. Be prepared for tight curves around some corners and plenty of construction but pack your camera, as there are plenty of viewpoints along the way. Distance: 82.5 miles

This forested road takes travellers from the Pemberton Valley to Lillooet and into BC’s Southern Interior. The 100 kilometre trek comes complete with steep grades, blind corners, one way bridges and switch backs, so be sure to drive with extra caution. However, the scenery is well worth the difficult drive as you are surrounded by Canadian nature at its best. Flourishing forests, crystal clear creeks and glistening glaciers are just the beginning. If you’re lucky, you might even come across a deer on the side of the road or a family of bears grabbing a drink by the creek. Distance: 59.0 miles

Travel to the edge of Western Canada with this stunning drive. Located on Vancouver Island, this 130 kilometre highway curves though mountain terrain to connect Port Alberni to Tofino. You haven’t experienced the west coast of Canada until you’ve driven through the twists and turns of the Mackenzie Range with the sandy white coasts and the rolling waves of the ocean keeping you company. The Pacific Rim Highway is one of the most challenging highways in British Columbia, especially in the middle section, so always drive with care. Distance: 75.0 miles

Discover the magnificence of the mountains on the Kootenay Parkway. The best part about this 100 kilometre highway is the adventure that waits at the end: hot and soothing Radium Hot Springs. From Banff, Alberta through the Kootenay National Park, you will be face to face with the world-renowned Rocky Mountains. As you will be travelling downhill for most of the journey, don’t forget to slow down and take in the flowing rivers, towering snow peaks and blanketed forests that makes British Columbia so beautiful. This spectacular 52-mile drive is the best way to see the dramatic remnants and rugged path left by gargantuan glaciers in Montana’s striking Glacier National Park. Only open from early-June to mid-October (or until first snowfall), the Going-to-the-Sun Road, aptly named for its ever-escalating sky-high stretch with switchbacks up and over the magnificent Continental Divide, traverses Glacier National Park from West Glacier to St. Mary and covers untapped wilderness, rugged mountains, glistening lakes, deep river gorges, glacial canyons, and the long Garden Wall. Red Rock Scenic Road, serves as an excellent introduction to some of the area’s most superb natural splendors and amazing vistas. Plan on devoting at least a full morning to driving along it and ogling at the striking red rocks, many of which have been named for their resemblance to man-made objects (such as Bell, Courthouse, Cathedral, or Castle Rocks), and lush greenery that stretches for as far as the eye can see. Finished in 1915, this gorgeous winding highway was the first paved road in the Northwest and America's first scenic highway. It was also part of the Oregon Trail and the last leg of Lewis and Clark's expedition. There are gushing waterfalls in spring, wildflower displays in summer and awe-inspiring views all year round. Hikers have plenty of trailheads to choose from, and cyclists can cruise two stretches of the old highway renovated for non-vehicle use. Distance: 69.8 miles

The Amalfi coast road that stretches from Sorrento to Amalfi village is considered by many as undoubtedly the most beautiful road in entire Europe. The visually enchanting drives take you through sea-hugging cliffs and serene valleys with plenty of beautiful villages on the way. For the less adventurous, there is also an alternate route that does not run so close to the sea from the edge of the cliffs. Still very safe and exciting, the Amalfi coast road is a journey that will leave you with a lifetime of memories. Distance: 22.6 miles

Starts from Alum Rock Ave. in East San Jose and goes all the way up to Lick Observatory. The view is amazing and the drive is filled with twisty S-bends, hairpins, tight switchbacks and a few straights. One of the best roads in Northern California in my opinion. As a sidenote, if you wanted to you could even continue down San Antonio Road since Highway 130 ends at the top where the observatory is. Distance: 18.0 miles
